Becky loves to cook...and boy does she do it well!!

Our final stop was at Linda's and we ate some of the best deep dish apple pie I've ever had. And played some pool. And, courtesy of Mark, sang some Christmas carols.

Finally there was a group photo, which I'll post soon.

You know, we get so involved in all the 'things' of Christmas... the gifts and plans. We hurry and we stress. Family and traditions are what it is all about. But I just realized that we need to keep our minds and eyes open for new traditions. This, I think will be one of them. I mean, no skirting the issue, dead on politics. It was July 2, 2008 (you have to wonder why a semi news junky like me is just becoming aware of this) The speech was supposed to be about volunteerism and new social programs that will promote the common good. Then the candidate went off the prepared speech. Here's the quote:

"We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded." (emphasis added)

Umm... What? a civilian security force? Just what does that mean? And what are they going to make secure? My neighborhood? Football games? National security objectives we've set? We've been attack free since 2001, so what other objectives do "we" have? Seriously..why do we need a highly funded powerful group of civilians? Does that mean they are armed? WHAT are they doing? I just can't figure it out. Or maybe I'm afraid to try.annielaureehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10105521648309848129noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1584911224840032379.post-21870995295301683452008-10-22T21:57:00.004-04:002008-10-22T22:22:42.657-04:00Prayin'

I was trimming the bushes about a month ago, when something flew at me. He said, she said... It's the best and the worst of this country.

That captivating "Hi Daddy" last night... the chilling stories of the small cell in Viet Nam... and the courage, beyond anything I could summon up...

The words, the pictures, the questions and answers. Wondering what do the Clintons have up their (collective) sleeves? Is McCain too old? What exactly is that change I am supposed to believe in?

What a statesman Kennedy is (in spite of the fact that there is very little I agree with). The solemn, almost tearful look on Maria Shriver's face while her uncle spoke, which said volumes.

All of these things are what makes our country great. That sounds like a canned statement, but today I am really reflecting on that fact.

My intern Mike is twenty something and a great asset to my group. He has the day off tomorrow. He is going to Baltimore and he is going to answer somewhere around 10 random questions. If (when) he is successful, he will undergo a computer search for any suspicious passport behavior. And then, all hurdles passed, he will say the pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. And he will repeat words that will result in his becoming a citizen.

I watch the events of the political season with some cynicism, but then the joy on Mike's face as he says 'awesome' when he is talking about the prospect of becoming a citizen of the US reminds me...

We are a blessed nation.
We are blessed people, individually and collectively.
And the agreement, disagreement, cynicism and lofty ideals -- they are all ingrained in the foundation that results in Mike's smile.

At its best and at its worst... I'm proud to be an American.

And so is Mike. An early congratulations to the newest citizen, Mike.annielaureehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10105521648309848129noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1584911224840032379.post-12533079549158528872008-08-24T21:05:00.004-04:002008-08-24T21:14:34.072-04:00Here they are...all in one place! We didn't do too much this weekend, or at least on Saturday. Since Apple is now allowing (even encouraging) third party software on the iphone, there are a ton of exciting things out there. But I haven't found anything as cool as Pandora (no, not even the Light Saber or the bubble wrap that you can pop).

Pandora allows you to create your own 'radio station'. After you open your account, you search an artist and Pandora plays a selection of songs, by that artist and others that are similar. You have the option of giving each song a thumbs up or a thumbs down and by doing that, you shape your future song choices for that station. How cool is that?

In a mellow mood? Create a station based around that. Feeling rockin? Just add a different station with a different theme! I'm tellin' you it is the best.

Oh...did I mention it's free?

That's what I'm talking about. I LOVE my iphone!annielaureehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10105521648309848129noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1584911224840032379.post-70462072815537267012008-07-21T20:38:00.005-04:002008-12-11T03:12:36.013-05:00What's it gonna be?Decisions decisions....

Once in a while in life you are faced with an opportunity for change. It is. And I can't believe it when I say I am 57 years old. How can that be? Anyways, here's how I spent my day.
I elected to take a 'just cause' day off of work.
I fell back asleep after the alarm went off.
I had coffee and watched the a.m. shows. I started with NBC because I am fixated on Tim Russert and had to see clips of his memorial service one more time. Then I went to Good Morning America 'cause I like it better.
Then I put on my gardening gloves and went out to play. Yes. I do. Honest, I enjoy it.
Took a break from gardening. Called Chris. They sang Happy B'day to me.
Then Chelsea made me a smoothie with fresh strawberries. Yum.
Then I went to Gabe's. I'm allowed, it's my birthday.
Then I came home. I opened a bottle of wine. White. Yum.
Talked to Mellie. Cam said happy birthday ya ya. Kaela said something about Micka Mouse.
Ate Hamburgers. Don grilled. Yum. And left over stirfry from yesterday. I went over the top with it yesterday and it tastes even better today.
That's pretty much it. It was a fabulous day. Think I'll take the day off on my birthday every year.annielaureehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10105521648309848129noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1584911224840032379.post-26878531533806167092008-06-19T08:18:00.007-04:002008-12-11T03:12:42.855-05:00It's Summer! It's summer... I can tell because we have moved outside. We've been spending all of our relaxing time on the deck and enjoying it in the usual ways. The flowers are going through their cycles, the perennials coming and going and the annuals gearing up for color throughout the season.

These are the first blooms of the evening primrose that Tina gave us. It transplanted without problem and is beginning to spread already. I'm looking forward to the whole bed being full of these delicate yellow flowers.

We also got a new camera, so we've been playing with it and with iphoto to enhance the photos -- although I have to say, the straight out of the camera shots are usually pretty darn good. Anyway, I have no idea what these flowers are, but they bloom at this time every year. The flowers don't stay nearly long enough. I just love them. I love the unusual shape, the texture and the color.

It's not only flowers that we like to have in our back yard. I went to the Mall. I walked the entire length of the Mall. And back again. Then I went home.

Sitting at the dinner table, I felt a little twinge. I didn't say anything. Until much later. And then it was time to go to the hospital and very early the next morning, Brad was born. All 9 pounds 11 ounces of him.

We didn't know his name until we saw him. There were a couple choices, but when we saw him we knew it was Brad.

By the way, did I mention he was crying before he was even completely born?

Grandpa Lunger was the first to come and see him in the hospital, aside from his dad and I that is. He snuck in at the beginning of his work day to meet his grandson. I won't ever forget how totally in love he was with his grandchildren.

His big sister came to see him in the hospital too. She couldn't wait to have him at home. That stopped somewhere around the first time he took a toy from her.

And now, that baby boy is on the verge of becoming a daddy himself. In just a few days, he will understand how such a small little creature can totally steal your heart. And how looking at that little one, the idea that he (or, in Brad's case, she) is totally dependent on you.

In my case, that was a very happy Mother's day. And I'm sure that this will be a very happy Father's day for Brad.

Happy Birthday Braddy. I voluntarily laid down on a table and had 12 needles stuck into me with the notion that I would be better because of it. Incredibly, I barely felt the needles, but definitely felt a sort of radiant heat as they did the cleansing they were charged to do. I had put a huge challenge in front of her... assorted joint pain, post nasal river running and butt fat. Is she up to the challenge? Or is it the need for qi (chi) to flow better? Or do I have 'damp'? All of these are new terms to me, but somehow...my knee and my left hand feel better. Unfortunately, none of my pants have yet fallen down when I stood up. I'll let you know if there is any progress on that front.annielaureehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10105521648309848129noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1584911224840032379.post-12472626366082515762008-05-02T21:22:00.002-04:002008-12-11T03:12:43.790-05:00Chelsea's Senior Prom
Chelsea and Colin at the lake before the Boiling Springs prom.

It was a beautiful evening, warm and sunny, and the whole town was at the lake. I get to work from home. Now let me tell you that working from home does have its downsides...I'm sure it does...I uh..ok, I just can't think of any now. Wait...you have to make your own coffee..I don't get to drive by my favorite field on the way to work. But there is nothing quite like rolling out of bed and booting the computer while pouring a cup of coffee, getting to work at 6:30 am after sleeping in until 6:25, reading and responding to email before others even hit the office door. Accomplishing things in half the time it would take in the office. No interruptions, nophones, no annoying office mates playing music or using the speaker phone while you are trying to concentrate. Twice the work in half the time, my personal feeling..

And then of course there are the 'invisible' (thank goodness) benefits. Hair untouched by comb (and for those of you have seen me just out of bed in the am, you know that should remain unseen). Jammies (my personal favorite work clothes have something to do with red flannel and polar bears). Unbrushed teeth (that may be too much information, but no one is around except Maze and his breath is way worse than mine, so as long as I fix this unshowered unbrushed situation before anyone gets home, it will all be ok).

I 'went' to a meeting today, dialed in on my cell phone, headset on, hands free and phone muted. While listening, I was able to have a short conversation with Chelsea and do my nails. If I had wanted, because of the fabulous i-phone, I could have read my personal email, surfed the web or texted Don at the same time. I, of course, was much too dedicated to the meeting to do those things. It is, after all, a work day.

OK, lunch break is over. Time for a pedicure...I mean another meeting.annielaureehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10105521648309848129noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1584911224840032379.post-79411352682713117622008-04-28T18:57:00.003-04:002008-04-28T19:09:51.187-04:00Yum!I've gotten in the habit of turning on food tv when I get home from work, if I'm home in time for my favorites. Today there were a couple recipes on that I'm going to try.

The first was for some awesome sounding bruschetta.

Slice ciabetta bread and drizzle with olive oil. Bake for 10 minutes at 350.
Spread apricot jam on the bread
Layer with one slice fontinella cheese, one slice of a baked chicken breast and some prosciutto.
Drizzle with more olive oil if desired.

It sounded a little strange at first, but Giada mentioned how sometimes sweet and savory complement each other (turkey and cranberry sauce...yeah, one of my favorite sandwiches). And since I LOVE LOVE LOVE prosciutto... mmmm sounds yummy.

The second recipe I will make for Chelsea's graduation party since it includes one of her favorite flavors..

On a brownie, spread Nutella and sprinkle chopped toasted hazelnuts and mini chocolate chips. Put in the oven for a few minutes to melt the chocolate a little and then cool in refrigerator until hard.

Chelsea loves Nutella.. so this will be a good surprise for her!

I'll let you know how things go--annielaureehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10105521648309848129noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1584911224840032379.post-30616479806481727442008-04-25T07:47:00.002-04:002008-04-25T08:04:50.446-04:00Getting to Know MeI'm reading a book that has inspired lots of thought. It's called The Success Principles written by Jack Canfield (the Chicken Soup for the Soul guy) and I came to it by way of another book, The Secret, brought to me by Oprah. I'm early in the book and already thinking so seriously about the things he has to say, that it is hard to imagine what has filled the remaining pages.

Anyway, the latest task from the book is to make a list of 101 goals you want to achieve before you die. And like all well written goals, they need to be measurable. THAT is a challenge. It's easy to say I want to retire with plenty of money to live a comfortable life. But how do you measure that? And when you are looking at 101 things, I've found that you can get pretty down into detail. So prepare yourselves... I am going to be working toward those goals ( I don't have 101 yet, but I'm still working on it, and I have started working on them...). Some of them involve you who read this blog, so you'll be learning more as time goes on.

In the meantime, Chris, will you teach me how to make spaghetti sauce?annielaureehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10105521648309848129noreply@blogger.com0
